A performance coach who once threw clubs and melted down on every round reveals the 36 mental game reflections that helped him — and hundreds of golfers at Graves Golf Academy — finally play to their potential under pressure.
From the Author
When Paul Monahan was a young golfer, he was immature, had zero perspective, and led with what his mom called a "hot Irish temper." It showed up every round — throwing clubs into trees, smashing irons, and letting expletives fly after every bad shot.
At 21, playing as a single at St. Bonaventure University, Paul hit a series of terrible shots on the first hole, melted down, and launched a club into a nearby tree. One of the guys he was paired with looked at him and said:
Years later, playing at Sunset Golf Course in Fort Erie, Ontario, Paul chunked an easy wedge into the lake. Then did it again. And again. Four balls in the water. Lying 9.
But this time, something was different. No explosion. He calmly put down another ball, took a deep breath, and executed the shot he'd envisioned. His playing partner turned to him and said:
That's when Paul realized: he was still playing the same game — but he had begun to master another game. The one between his ears. The inside game. The Most Important Game.
Focusing only on the outside game is fine… until it isn't.
Positive thinking crumbles the moment things go sideways at the turn. Your mind still races when the pressure's on.
Practice doesn't replicate the pressure of real play. You can hit 1,000 balls, but that doesn't prepare you for the first tee with $50 on the line.
Focusing harder actually makes mental interference worse. As Paul writes, the tighter your grip on what should happen, the harder it is to experience reality productively.
Operating from blame is a trap that limits your potential. You missed the putt because you misread the break — not because the greens are terrible.
Emotional awareness. Dropping expectations. Managing fear. Staying playful under pressure. These are learnable skills — and they're exactly what this book teaches through 36 real, practical reflections.
Introducing
36 essays on the mental game of golf. Written by a golfer, for golfers. Each one stands alone — read one before your next round and take the big idea to the course.
This isn't a dense psychology textbook. It's a collection of practical, relatable reflections drawn from Paul's own transformation, his coaching at Graves Golf Academy, and stories from Jack Nicklaus, stoic philosophy, comedy clubs, airports, and five-year-olds on putting greens.
Learn to notice your thoughts as they happen and redirect unproductive thinking before it costs you strokes. (Chapters 5, 16, 35)
The tighter your grip on outcomes, the worse you play. Paul shows you how to loosen that grip and focus on process — the way Jack Nicklaus did. (Chapters 3, 6, 9)
Walter Hagen expected 4 bad shots per round — so he was never surprised. Learn to mentally rehearse your response to setbacks so pressure becomes fuel, not friction. (Chapters 16, 15, 35)
A 5-year-old on a putting green outperformed everyone because he didn't overthink. Todd Graves calls it "playing empty." You'll learn how to access that state. (Chapters 2, 4, 7)
+ 20 more chapters covering social connection, curiosity, recharging, inspiration, acceptance & more
Emerging from every story and reflection are Paul's energetic presence, years of coaching experience, and keen observations about the game we love. A must read for the golf course and beyond.
The mental game isn't just about technique — it's about attitude, relaxing, and making golf a source of joy in our lives. Full of great hints to increase enjoyment, yield better shots, and decrease the stress and frustration that leads to bad shots and worse golf.
The wisdom that Paul has included here is on point and extremely relatable whether you are a passionate golfer, a parent, or just someone trying to get it right every day. Thank you, Paul, for this gem.

As Paul writes: "You are not only something that is. You are something that is becoming."

The difference is less than the price of a sleeve of Pro V1s.
It's the inside game — the one you play between the ears. Mastering it makes it possible to show up on the course and perform at your best, no matter what's happening.
